John Robinson

John Robinson is a photographer who lives in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. He was born in Ndola on the Zambian Copperbelt and spends his working life in and around Africa, John works as a photo editor, tutor and photographer who focuses on life around him, and as in the words of Robert Sobukwe ‘being African is a state of mind’. He learned his photographic craft at the Market Theatre Photography Workshop in Johannesburg from 1992 to 1994 and got his first freelance shift at The Star newspaper also in Johannesburg. John is not a war photographer and if asked he will say “I would rather photograph the woman trying to grow her tomatoes alongside the battlefield.”
