Nuno Moreira | State of Mind

Mafra, Portugal – 2012

State of Mind is a photographic series, and ultimately a book, about the individual quality of mysterious strangers.

The images were captured over a period of several years traveling in countries such as Japan, Portugal, Hungary, Malaysia, Spain, South-Korea, Romania, Russia, Taiwan – and what emerged is a visual narrative on the poetic quality of individuality and what it means to be lost in thoughts.
The State of Mind series is about the “thinking moments” and the uncertain atmosphere surrounding the people and places encountered on the way.

Q&A with Nuno Moreira

Photography is…

A way of articulating thoughts and abstract sensations into something visible. Producing images (in general) is the best way I’ve found of expressing myself.
I find it liberating to take photos and it’s an ongoing process of self-discovery.

Photography and writing…

Photography and writing can be complimentary areas or just completely different forms of expression.
In many aspects I feel photography is a dialogue I’m having with myself – sometimes posing questions, other times just listening.
Just like writing, or any other form of art I would say that it gets more interesting if there’s a sense of discomfort.
My interest in photography is creating a stage, or should I say a mood, in which a given topic has enough space to be thought about and breathe on its own.

Who left the biggest impression on you?

It’s not like I’m on the verge of dying to know exactly who left the biggest impression on me.
I guess more than saying names, it’s the things people do and how they do it that stick to my memory.
