[M]ILAN, Italy – January 17, 2016 – Albertina d’Urso, a talented, Italian photographer, recently announced her latest project – Out of Tibet.
This project is a book of photography and a traveling exhibit that will unite visually the Tibetans in exile who are displaced all around the world. During her first trip to Tibet in the year 2000, she could see how Tibetan culture and religion were repressed in their homeland. She came back with a sense of sadness and disappointment about what she thought was lost forever. But a few years later, d’Urso met a Tibetan family in India who assured her that by visiting their settlement, she would find what she was looking for. So, she decided to follow them to Bylakuppe, a refugee camp in Southern India where she discovered how the refugees were able to uphold their culture.
For the last 10 years d’Urso has been documenting Tibetan refugees in several areas of India (Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Sikkim, Darjeeling, Ladakh, Bodhgaya), Nepal, Taiwan, US, UK, France, Switzerland, Italy, Belgium, Holland and Canada; focusing on their daily activities in the countries where they now live and the deep intimacy of their private lives where they continue to practice and honor their Tibetan beliefs.
The talented photographer’s goal is to unite visually, the Tibetans in exile who are now displaced all around the world, living in limbo, in a unique de facto state. With a Prime Minister and a government that no country in the world recognizes; an official language and their own medicine, symbols, calendar, and, above all, their spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama. The hardcover book, designed by renowned designer Teun van der Heijden, is ready to be published by one of the finest International Publishers: Dewi Lewis Publishing. It will measure 31 x 24.5 cm (12.2 x 9.6 inches), contain 208 pages, 100 color pictures, two different kinds of high-quality paper. It will also include a forward by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, an introduction by Lobsang Sangay (Prime Minister of the Tibetan Government in Exile) and various inserts with quotes from Tibetan refugees. Currently, she is also organizing a traveling exhibition in top locations in Milan, London, New York, Mumbai, and in as many countries as she can. However, before everyone can enjoy this incredibly, moving book of art, d’Urso needs help. That’s why she launched this Kickstarter campaign. The goal of this project is to raise €15,000 by February 27, 2016. The funds raised will go towards printing, and shipping the books AND the traveling exhibitIon.
