Awake

Awake, photo essay by Fábio Miguel Roque
[A]wake is a biographic photography project, is a journey that attempts to reconcile the author’s vision and conceptual and documentary photography because one does not necessarily have to be different from each other, the image speaks for itself, be it the way it is classified.
Awake is a trip, one movement, one errant situation where anyone could enter. But there was no one, it was me.
What caused it? And why? Until today I can’t explain, but I moved all those nights with insomnia, walking on those roads and dirt trails, roads that I walked oftentimes.
Distress, it could be a way back to alcohol, or drugs return, a way against everything! But no! In me this was reflected in an half conscious state and givest care of you, not stopping, not shrunk, not scared, but to walk, walk, walk, walk, how if everything was normal, like if life would be this, and tomorrow will be the same routine. But there is no routine, only a personal crisis, psychological, perhaps subconsciously, that isn’t a choice, it happened!

This is the meaning of this work, or not… Probably this is all a lark, the man did not suffer from any type of insomnia or bad. Choose to do this project at this way, because he think this is interesting at the photographic point of view. This is the truth of things, but what is the truth of things? Since I have not slept that gives me to repeat. So, the truth is in the way we see things.
One thing I can guarantee, at the time I took the pictures I didn’t do any assembly or staging, everything was found and registered in the state it was.

Q&A with Fábio Miguel Roque

Photography is…
Photography is one of the most important things in my life, is the perfect way of getting to express my art.

Photography and writing…
It’s an almost perfect combination. I think we can get these important things when we combine photography with writing. As a photographer, sometimes I do not like that photography pass to the background in relation to writing.

Who left the biggest impression on you?
So many people in my personal life, people like my wife, my son and my parents have a great importance in my daily life. Artistically, while studying photography, I had a teacher who particularly liked the Portuguese photographer Antonio Julio Duarte.

Tell us a little about yourself
What can I say … I love photography, I love books, and more and more like the combination of both… photobooks. I have a small publishing house, The Unknown Books. In my personal life I love being with my family, love movies and since childhood that I have a great passion for dogs.
